About

Surrey artist Maggie Read was trained at the University of the Creative Arts, formerly Epsom College of Art and Design, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration. She worked as a freelance illustrator for several years before having a family and re-launching her career as a Tutor and Demonstrator. Twenty-five years ago she created Pirbright Art Club and has since organised and run the meetings and annual exhibitions, as well as outdoor painting days, workshops, art holidays and private classes. Maggie continues to paint and exhibit alongside her busy teaching schedule.

Experienced in teaching most media, Maggie's strengths are in all aspects of drawing; watercolour painting; acrylic painting; soft pastels and pen & wash. She ran the  Portrait class for many years at Woking Adult Learning Centre. She also taught drawing & watercolours, to beginners and improvers, for many years. More recently Maggie has been working in acrylics for her own paintings. She is skilled in showing students how to achieve interesting composition and prepare sketches for paintings. Demonstrations and workshops are clearly structured, and colour-mixing is kept simple, using mainly primary colours.

Maggie and other members of Pirbright Art Club were invited to display work in a Pop-up Exhibition at St Michael & All Angels Church, Pirbright during June 2022. The art display and sale coincided with the Pirbright Garden Walks. Some members, including Maggie, had work published in the Pirbright Art Book and this was on sale at the church.

Maggie Read takes part in Surrey Artists Open Studios most years. She and another PAC member, Nina Klein, shared an Open Studio across 3 weekends in June 2021 from Nina's home in Merrow. They had indoor and outdoor (gazebo) areas to display their paintings which were part of the Merrow Art Trail. They welcomed many visitors and Maggie also ran a series of demonstrations - these were not advertised in the brochure, so invited guests and visitors had the chance to watch them.
