About The Artist

Surrey artist, Maggie Read was trained at the University of the Creative Arts, formerly Epsom College of Art and Design, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration. She worked as a freelance illustrator for several years before having a family and re-launching her career as a Tutor and Demonstrator. Twenty years ago she opened Pirbright Art Club and has since organised and run regular exhibitions, outdoor painting days, workshops, art holidays and private classes. Maggie continues to paint and exhibit alongside her busy teaching schedule.

Maggie self-portraitExperienced in teaching most media, Maggie's strengths are in drawing; watercolours; pastels and pen & wash. More recently Maggie has been working in acrylics and inks for her own paintings. She is skilled in showing students how to achieve interesting composition and prepare sketches for paintings. Demonstrations and workshops are clearly structured, and colour-mixing is kept simple.

Maggie demonstrates to art groups and societies, as well as in her workshops and classes. Figures and portraits, landscapes, seascapes and still-life are among the many subjects which she demonstrates. For a full range of subjects and media offered, please look under  Demonstrations

LATEST NEWS

Until further notice, Maggie's Friday Painting classes at St. Marks have been cancelled. See below for an alternative way of continuing to receive demonstrations, instruction and advice, as well as critiques of students' work.

FRIDAY CLASS

During this time of uncertainty and classes being cancelled for the next two months, Maggie will be continuing with Friday Class sessions by being available during normal class times for advice and will be painting alongside the students .... they can then send images of their work at various stages for comments, suggestions and critique. Other members of the class can add their own views. Maggie may sometimes post a short video of a demonstration via the WhatsApp group and can even take video calls if people prefer to talk "live".

Students who would prefer to send jpg images for Maggie's professional advice, via email, may do so instead.

The Friday Class theme for the Spring Term is based on paintings by the Scottish Colourists. The class has been painting still-life and portraits in the style of this group of 4 artists who were recently featured in an exhibition at the Lightbox, Woking. Examples of student's work can be seen below. First however is a series of images showing Maggie's Scottish Colourists portrait in various study and demonstration stages. These images were used by students during the classes.

OTHER NEWS

Maggie is a member of a group of artists who regularly meet for "en plein air" painting at art-in-the-park days held at Quex House in Kent. These days take place throughout the Summer on the first Saturday of each month. Further details on Quex Park can be found on their website.

In July 2018, Maggie was one of around 50 artists who took part in the Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year competition at Inverary, on Loch Fyne. Although this great opportunity was not one to be missed and was enjoyed by all the artists - Maggie says : "After a week of glorious weather, the day we painted was wet and misty - there was almost an entire white-out over the Loch and continuous rain made painting a real challenge!" Fortunately she had been in the area for a few days already and had made sketches and taken photos of the beautiful scenery : "I decided to paint what I had seen of the reflections in the Loch and the wonderful colours of the mountains, which I had been seeing for the previous few days!" (see photos of the day below)!

Maggie intends to enter the 2020 competition - further information will follow.

Maggie's painting entitled "Loch Fyne in Mist" (right) was sold at the Village Artists  Exhibition held at Denbies Wine Estate, Dorking just before Christmas.
