About The Artist
Surrey artist,
Maggie Read was trained at the Epsom College of Art and Design (now
known as the University of the Creative Arts) where she studied
Graphic Design and Illustration. She worked as a freelance illustrator
for several years before having a family and re-launching her career as
an Art Tutor in Adult Education. Maggie continued to paint and accept
commissions for portraits and illustrations. Twelve years ago she opened
Pirbright Art Club in Surrey and
has since organised and run regular
exhibitions, outdoor painting days, workshops, art holidays and private
classes.
Experienced in teaching most media, Maggie's strengths are in drawing; watercolours; pastels and pen & wash.
More recently Maggie has been working in water-mixable oils. She is skilled
in showing students how to achieve interesting composition and prepare
sketches for paintings. Demonstrations are clear, and colour-mixing
is kept simple.
Maggie demonstrates to art groups and societies as well as in her
regular classes. Figures and portraits, landscapes, seascapes and
still-life are among the many subjects which she demonstrates.
In October 2011, Maggie gave a demonstration to Brookwood Art Group on
the subject of seascapes in watercolour and pastel. This will be
followed up with a workshop to the same group in Summer 2012.
