Maggie Read

About The Artist

Surrey artist, Maggie Read was trained at the University of the Creative Arts, formerly Epsom College of Art and Design, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration. She worked as a freelance illustrator for several years before having a family and re-launching her career as a Tutor and Demonstrator. Nineteen years ago she opened Pirbright Art Club and has since organised and run regular exhibitions, outdoor painting days, workshops, art holidays and private classes. Maggie continues to paint and exhibit alongside her busy teaching schedule.

Maggie self-portraitExperienced in teaching most media, Maggie's strengths are in drawing; watercolours; pastels and pen & wash. More recently Maggie has been working in water-mixable oils. She is skilled in showing students how to achieve interesting composition and prepare sketches for paintings. Demonstrations and workshops are clear, and colour-mixing is kept simple.

Maggie demonstrates to art groups and societies as well as her regular classes. Figures and portraits, landscapes, seascapes and still-life are among the many subjects which she demonstrates. For a full set of subjects and media offered, please look under  Demonstrations

Leatherhead Art Society
Maggie gave a very well-attended demonstration to Leatherhead Art Club on Tuesday January 16th .... called Pen & Wash : Boats & Harbours.

At least 30 people were in the audience and they watched Maggie's painting develp on a large screen, where the details of her pen drawing were clearly picked up by the overhead camera. The scene - from one of her own photos of Mevagissey Harbour - was complex and full of intricate detail, which suited the medium well. The first part of the two hour demonstration was spent completing the pen drawing - with Maggie describing many of the marks she was making and answering many queries about the techniques she used and the materials.

After a break and more questions, as members came to look at her work up close and to study some of the other examples of pen and wash, the demonstration continued with the finishing touches put to the drawing and the adding of coloured washes in watercolour. Maggie says "Pen is a challenging medium to demonstrate, as it takes so long to cover even a square inch of paper with the tiny buildings and boats in this kind of scene!"

Many club members gave Maggie positive feedback on the demo - one lady even said she had learned more about pen and wash in that two hours than she did on a whole three-day course she went on! High praise indeed.

Maggie exhibited with the Village Artists at Denbies Wine Estate, Dorking during September. Twelve local artists were showing their work at this prestigious gallery and most sold at least one painting over the two-week period.

Past Workshop
Maggie ran a successful one-day workshop at the Woking Adult Learning Centre on Saturday October 14th. Titled "Drawing with Pastel : Still-Life Study with Flowers", it was a chance to explore this exciting theme with a small group of learners. Many techniques were covered and some successful paintings were produced.

Outdoor Painting Days
Maggie ran a series of Outdoor Drawing & Painting Days this Summer, as usual. Many of her students and members of Pirbright Art Club joined her for these and enjoyed the varied locations and their challenges! These photos show some of our group enjoying the tour of the Jane Austen Museum, which we visited before we started the art session. Click on the "Outdoor Painting Days" tab above to see more photos of all the locations.

Cornwall Art Holiday
Maggie's 2017 Art Holiday took place at Bodrugan Barton, near Mevagissey, Cornwall in early July. The weather was fine and the artists were able to paint outside for most of the week, visiting some stunning locations including Charlestown Harbour, Colona Bay and Gorran Haven.
